Elsie Merchison quilt

This quilt was my challenge quilt for the l999 quilt show in Abbotsford. The theme for the quilt was "Out of the past comes the future". The picture on the quilt is a photo transfer on cotton muslin of a picture taken of my mother in l9l3 at the age of l8.  She taught me to sew at an early age. The fans represent the Victorian era when she was born. The nine patch blocks represent the quilts she made during the great depression -- mostly from bleached flour sacks and recycled clothing. -- and the butterflys remind me of the applique pattern she had sewn on a depression bed spread which I had on my bed as a child.

Close up of the centre piece.
